I saw a pretty amazing thing on a packed 29 this afternoon: a woman talking on the phone and texting, at the same time. Her left hand held a cell phone to her ear, and in her right hand she was frantically typing on a sidekick with her thumb. And she was standing. The bus was so packed that she was being held up (seemingly comfortably) by all of the bodies around her, leaving her to engage in what I would normally criticize as completely idiotic behavior. It was kind of cool. Just thought I'd share.

high school friend

you were not what i expected at all from a “homecoming queen”. not only were you beautiful and popular but also smart, talented, and incredibly loving. you blow away stereotypes.

And a survey the instructor passed around was fairly interesting, albeit strangely worded in spots. Some of the questions are deliberately ambiguous to inspire discussion and debate, while others are more straightforward. Either way, I think the topic of animal cognition - perceptions, thoughts, feelings, and consciousness - is an incredibly fascinating and important one, especially in a world with industrial farming, animal testing, and an ever-expanding market (legitimate as well as black) for furs, leathers, and other organic goodies. What do you think?

Latin abbreviations: eo. loc.

Came across this rather pointy discussion in Wikipedia talk space on the meaning of 'eo. loc.'.  Apparently it means 'in the same place', similar to 'ibid.'.  I hadn't come across it, nor is it in any of the standard Latin abbreviation lists that I looked at, or in any of my dictionaries.

I assume it is short for 'eodem loco'.  Has anyone else come across this term?

sending love

  • Aug. 26th, 2008 at 11:28 PM

before i fall asleep tonight, i need to send some love.

  • first and foremost, love, support, healing, protection, and light goes out to rosalie’s niece and her family. tomorrow for the worry, thursday for the surgery, and as many days following as necessary for the healing.
  • lots of love to lisa and her family as well - talking to you was one of the highlights of my day!
  • love and laughter and so much joy to the ciocias. you give me such happiness and you make my heart light! to tuscany, colombia, and the world!!!
  • safety and love to new orleans - hurricane gustav’s path is too close for comfort right now. while i’m glad florida is out of the error cone, i don’t wish these storms on anyone!
  • and finally, all my love to my love! i am so impressed with your strength, courage, and perseverance! you are stronger than you know.

high school classmate & friend

“won’t you please, please won’t you be, my neighbor?” you sang the day we met. i had a huge crush on you. seeing your picture now still makes me smile.

It may seem odd to be nostalgic about something like this. But in times of stress and worry, sometimes you retreat into whatever comfort you can find whenever you find it. I remember the first time I saw this movie, in a movie theater at midnight, an old movie theater in Chico, California with only one screen and tiers of seats stair-stepping up and up three floors. When it was over, they played it again for free--we got out of there at five in the morning and then went to get breakfast and coffee. The movie didn't have the reputation it's gotten by now. Heck, not even The Doors had the reputation they have now.

I'm writing a song in which the chorus will be latin. I'm a student of the language in only the loosest sense of the word... so please forgive my clumsiness.

English, the chorus is:

"The road is long
the road is hard
but I am not alone.
The road is dangerous (or uncertain)
the road is narrow
but I am not alone."

I'm having trouble figuring out word order and adjective forms, if I've even got it right (With only the internet and Latin for Dummies as help...):

"Via prolix (longus?)
via difficilis (is there a better word? asper, gravis?)
quod non solum.
Via periculosus
via angustus
quod non solum."

the tweaking under the cut... )

It appears the emotional scars from Britney Spears’ much maligned performance on MTV'S music awards last year haven’t healed quite yet. After weeks of ”will she or won’t she” speculation about whether Spears will perform again this year, her manager confirmed she will not... “Britney Spears will not be performing at the VMAs this year.  I’m telling you officially and unequivocally,” said manager Larry Rudolf on Seacrest’s KISS-FM morning radio show in Los Angeles.

Who could forget Britney, who used to steal the show with her song and dance performances, clumsily teetering around the stage last year with a bad hair weave and ill-fitting lingerie outfit? It was so bad, it was good. So of course I have the clip up top, but what was actually funnier was when Tyra gives it to Britney for sucking so bad... ( well, not really.. but it is sooo funny)
